Scale Modes – Lesson 5 – D Mixolydian W/tablature – Solo Lead Guitar

I am posting the main modes of the Major scale and then when I have the 7 diatonics posted I will show you how they fit together and how you can use them to play lead over the whole fret board.

It would depend on the chords or partial chords Malmsteen plays. If I remember he is a big fan of altered scales, especially the harmonic minor. So he could be throwing in a D# note and playing the raised 7th of the E aeolian to make it harmonic.

One other question, dkblanke, using the key of E minor as an example, is if I’m playing the pentatonic which goes from the 12th to 15th fret on the 2 E strings, the 12th and 14th on the A string, D string and G string and 12th and 15th on the B string – this is the E MINOR pentatonic, not E MAJOR – correct? I know the other pentatonics that go with this but I’m just wondering if this would be E major or minor? Thanks again for your all of your assistance!

thanx for the comment, I am glad to help.First question: yes, if you play the corresponding modes it’s the same as playing the whole Key on the whole fretboard, in this case Em/Gmaj.Second question: If you mean the Key of F MINOR and shift everything with it, then YES that is exactly how you transpose keys. AND if you play Aeolian on G then you are in they key of G MINOR (not major). It would be in B flat major. So yes, I think you have it, great job ! time to rock :)

Thanks again! I noticed that I skipped out a few words above, yet you still replied exactly to what I was asking – very helpful. The reason I asked the question about the notes in my modal scales, in the key of E minor in this example, was because it seems that NOT all of these notes are in key w/the underlying riffs which ARE in Eminor; however, when I use my pentatonics in Eminor – they do seem to be in key as opposed to the modals which contain some notes in key but not all. Please help!

I am not sure exactly what you are asking, however, know that the aeolian and minor blues scales can be overlay’d to jam in. Mode/pet scales are just a guide, the real relation is in the scale to chords. If you are playing diatonic riffs in Eminor, the notes will be in ‘key’. If you overlay the mixolydian mode ever the E then the notes, of course will not match Em and will be pretty dissonant .

(Cont from other comment space) What would be a well known ex. of a diatonic riff as opposed to a riff?Once again, I really appreciate this! Music is my life+some would be shocked that I’m asking some of these questions but that’s just fine in my humble mind…It’s been years since I’ve reviewed this helpful info+the learning process, overall musically, is more than a lifetime’s worth. I now need to really learn the best scales used for particular chords. Once I can get this,I’ll be psyched.

Gain knowledge where ever you can find it :) Diatonic just means in the scale, NON-diatonic would be like the flat 5th in the blues scale. (Bb in Em/aeolian). So if you Played (full chords) Em – C – D and land on the Bb it creates a suspense that wants to be resolved, so it sounds ok there, however, if you hold it to long it sounds like you are playing out [of tune]. So though the “blue” note isn’t diatonic it adds sass to the lick when used right.hope that helps

You’ve been absolutely helpful. I guess I could give you an example of something I did when I was younger+this should clarify things a bit: On my older bands first demo, I was still coming out of the 80’s in that “shredder/Malmsteen” phase; thus, my leads were about technicality+little else (17 Yrs back). However,if the thrash metal song was typically in Eminor,I would play my diatonics in Eminor+some of the notes I hit were on, yet some were out of key.(Cont)
